Being boss is a daily practice.
From the moment you open your eyes in the morning to how and when you decide to call it a night, being boss is part of your entire day. Your mindset and actions are constantly conspiring with you to move you closer to your goals and help you live a fulfilling life. You are the master of your own life. Every single day.
This “everyday” part is where habits and routines come in. While boundaries help you set some rules to nourish and protect certain areas of your life, habits and routines are the behaviors and actions that will actually lead you toward your goals. And when you practice them so much they become automatic, you begin heading where you want to go without even thinking about it. You start saving a ton of time because you’re not considering every little step (like the first thing you need to do when you wake up in the morning), and you start working more efficiently and effectively (because the path is already laid out in front of you). We like to follow up on our rallying cry of “Do the work” with our unofficial motto, which is “Work smarter, not harder,” and we do it by setting up habits and routines all over our lives and jobs that help us do just that.
If the backbone of discipline is boundaries, then habits and routines are how you implement those boundaries and actually practice discipline—so if you’re craving more willpower and structure, what you really need is to practice good habits and routines. Because you don’t need more willpower; you need those habits and routines to help you make it easy for you to do what you will to do. Habits and routines anchor you in your day and root you into your role as a creative entrepreneur. They’re the antidote to the feelings of fear and uncertainty that plague us all.
In this chapter, we share how developing conscious and intentional habits and routines will support you along your path to achieving your goals, and—on the flip side—leaving bad habits unchecked will sabotage your success. We’ll show you how to set up your daily boss practice by defining the habits and routines you wish to use to shape your life and lead you to success. We’ll also introduce you to our favorite habits and routines, including goal and intention setting, and how these practices will create the foundation for taking meaningful action every day.
